Frank gave me 12 or 13 pieces and said, "I want you to learn this. I'm putting you on a temporary retainer." [...]

A week later, I came back down from Santa Barbara; I had learned every piece that he gave me as a solo piano arrangement, even "The Black Page" and "Punky's Whips." He thought I would just learn the chords and some of the melodic licks, but I did everything as if I would do it solo. So he was utterly flabbergasted.
