Some of the material has been overdubbed (Bolic Studios & Paramount Studios, Hollywood), but all basic tracks are live. The Roxy remote recording was done by Wally Heider (16-track 30-ips), engineered by Kerry McNab (who also is responsible for the re-mix on the whole album).

[FZ] did manage to mix almost two entire shows in quadraphonic sound.

1987—Digital Stereo Mix & Video Transfer

• Available in The True Story Of Frank Zappa's 200 Motels (1989); Cheepnis (2013); on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 1 (1988); You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 3 (1989); You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 4 (1991); and Roxy By Proxy (2014).

In 1987, Frank prioritized working on the totality of Roxy material for the first time. He and Bob Stone [...] mixed all the sound masters down into stereo 1630 digital format. Simultaneously, the Roxy picture film negatives were sent to Pacific Video, to be transferred and color-corrected to 1'' video masters.

[...] Frank did manage to release a small excerpt of newly archived footage in his Honker Home Video release The True Story Of Frank Zappa's 200 Motels (Zappa, 1989, on vhs only), while some of the audio was featured in the You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore series of albums.

In 1999 cameraman Van Carlson spent months at the Zappa house with an editor and an AVID computer set-up, painstakingly working all of the Roxy picture elements into sync with the 1987 digital mixes. [...]

Gail would sanction the Van Carlson sync session, only to end up having issues and differences with the final outcome. As a result, the entire sync session was not backed up properly. [...] Dweezil took the time to edit [a trailer] with Van while the sync session was still in place. This is the trailer that was featured on Zappa.com [(2000)] and the Baby Snakes DVD release (2003).

In 2006 [...] Gail would ask Producer/Director Jim Gable to take on the task of syncing and editing the 20 minute piece which featured the first two songs of Roxy Show 3 ("Montana" and "Dupree's Paradise").

Having done a lot of editing for other "problem children" with similar issues, my first challenge was to try and sync all of the footage. This process took more than eight weeks and a lot of trial and error to complete.

This box set contains brand new 2016 mixes by Craig Parker Adams from brand new 96K 24B transfers of the multi-track masters. The mix approach was to simply showcase the sounds that went to tape with minimal production, effects or processing.
