The DOORS' lead vocalist, Jim Morrison, had just been arrested for exposing his weenie on stage a short time before this tape was made. Fear and panic gripped every promoter in the live concert industry—"Will that awful group I just hired go on stage and do THE SAME THING?", they wondered. When we arrived at this gig we were threatened by a blobulent redneck with a shotgun in his hand, demanding assurances that none of us would commit such an evil act within the hallowed halls of his miserable venue. The oath we recite here was prepared on the spot, just to set his tiny mind at ease.

In accordance with regulations in the contract of this here rock & roll engagement
And the imbecilic laws of the state of Florida
And respective regulations perpetrated by REDNECKS EVERYWHERE

So Tracy Is A Snob turns out to be from the late show performance of The Torture Never Stops. My guess is that Emperor of Ohio comes from the same song, after the drum solo like in the Fort Collins show the day before.

pbuzby, Zappateers, June 20, 2008

I just relistened to Emperor Of Ohio, and yes, it sounds like a Torture keyboard solo excerpt followed by Vinnie soloing and preparing the segue into Heavy Duty Judy. I also listened to parts of Pick Me from the SLC early show, and it has a short drum solo segment (2:52-3:23) but it is not the one on the YCDTOSA track.

Tan Mitsugu, quoted in ARF: Notes & Comments

After Ike shouts 'Isn't that amazing?' (6:29), an edit to '81/'82 band occurs. (Ike disappered, and Steve Vai's guitar and Ed Mann's marimba come in, and also, the bass is switched to Mini-Moog bass.)

flambay, October 13, 2014

the first part of the song and the FZ solo are indeed from Universal City, CA and the final part of the song ("It must be just what they all need . . . " etc.) is indeed from 1982.

For the middle part of the song, after the FZ solo you will have to add:

1984 12 17—Paramount Theater, Seattle, WA Early Show
and
1984 11 23—Bismarck Theatre, Chicago, IL Early Show

Arthur Barrow, Of Course I Said Yes!, 2016, p. 79

Before the show, there was a meeting in Frank's dressing room. He had an electric piano in there, and had written a little C Lydian vamp in 13/8. [...] Frank said that we would use that as a vehicle for L. Shankar to improvise over. I thought to myself, "I'm sure glad I don't have to do this one since Pat [O'Hearn] is doing all the jams. Have fun, Pat!" Then Frank turned to me and said, "I want you to play bass on this one."

Patrick O'Hearn interviewed by Robert L. Doeschuk, Keyboardist, April, 1994

Anything went. I remember writing down a story that had occurred to me, part of it personal and part of it fiction. I read it to Frank before one show, and he said, "Let's do this tonight!" Sure enough, at one point in the show, they improvised musical background, and I recited the story.

Well, then there was a quest for the perfect hunk
I spell that h-u-n-k, hunk
You know, I like them tall and blonde.

Lisa Popeil, interviewed by Andrew Greenaway, The Idiot Bastard, May 29, 2010

The lyric idea in "Lisa's Life Story" was to make it seem as though Frank was the 'perfect hunk', but then at the end, throwing in the zinger 'and BLOND' to deflate the build-up.

13. Lonesome Cowboy Nando

My name is Nando
I am a marine biologist

Onno Gross, The David Ocker Internet Interview, 1994-1995

F. Boero (1987): Life cycles of Phialella zappai n. sp., Phialella fragilis and Phialella sp. (Cnidaria, Leptomedusae, Phialellidae) from Central California.—Journal of Natural Histors, 21, 465-480. and it says in the ending: "I have the pleasure in naming this species after the modern music composer Francis (Frank) Vincent Zappa.

Francesco Gentile, The David Ocker Internet Interview, 1994-1995

Nando is Fernando Boero, a marine biologyst from Genoa, the Italian city where the 88 part of "Lonesome Cowboy Nando" was recorded. Nando wrote for us the story of his friendship with FZ, it's a very nice story, I hope I'll find someone from affz that will want to translate it in English. Meanwhile here is a rough translation of the begining of the article:

"There is nothing I'd like better than having a jellyfish named after me" (FZ).

In 1982, after becoming a researcher in the University of Genoa, I asked for a work fund that could allow me to be for a long time in the Bodega Marine Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. The purpose was to study the taxonomy and the ecology of the local jellyfish fauna (yes, there exist people who earn a living studing jellyfish). Actually the true purpose was another one: to meet Frank Zappa. My strategy was a simple one:

—that fauna was (and is) not well known;—I would find some new species for sure;—once I have found them I would have to give them a name;—I would dedicate one of them to FZ;—I would tell him about it;—He would invite me for a visit.

And that's how it went.
